Helambu Trekking

Helambu trekking is another popular trekking trail in Langtang trekking region. Helambu is situated in the northern part of the country; about 75km from Kathmandu and the area is inhabited by Sherpa’s but languages, culture and the dress of Helambu Sherpa are different from those of Solokhumbu Sherpa. On the way to any Langtang trek you can also do Helambu trek either from Gosaikunda or from Ganja La pass (5106m). The route from Ganja La pass is quite difficult in winter because of height and usually snow-covered trail. Sundarijal is the best place to start Helambu valley trekking but if you prefer from the Melamchi pul bazaar by bus from Kathmandu also possible. With a short drive you can get to Sundarijal from Kathmandu by private car or van. In the way of Helambu there is a surprising amount of old- growth forest.Magnificent old rhododendrons grace the trail between Tharepati and Malemchi gaon. It has a splendid variety of wild flowers, snow covered peaks, and varieties of birds to make your journey remarkable.The best time for trekking in the Helambu valley is from October to May. In the way of Helambu trekking there is the chance of altitude problems and you should be prepared for and possible snow at Tharepati during the winter. In this area good lodges are abundant and un crowded.
          Helambu valley trekking is popular for superb Himalayan scenery including the Jugal Himal, Gauri shanker 7145m, Dorje Lakpa 6988m, Ganesh Himal 7406m, Langtang Lirung 7246m , an opportunity to see the nearly whole Nepalese Himalayan mountain range from Annapurna in the west, to Makalu in the east. etc and enjoy with Tibetan sherpa people and their culture.
          Helambu trekking begins from Sundarijal, a Himalayan river-fed water reservoir and climbs onto the Shivapuri ridge offering gorgeous views of Gauri Shanker 7145m, Langtang Lirung 7246m and Ganesh Himal 7406m .Following a ridgeline the trail passes through Kutumsang 2460m, the first permanently inhabited village of this course and climbs through cool rhododendron forests (crawling with leeches during monsoon) to Tharepati 3597m, the highest point of the Helambu trekking. The trail from Tharepati plunges 1,000m to a tributary of the Melamchi Khola and above it the aging village of Melamchi-gaon . The gompa set on the to Tarke Ghyang commands excellent views of Dorje Lakpa 6988m and Ganja La to the north. The next few days walk is through interesting Melamchi Khola valley to Talamarang and the paddy fields of Melamchi Pul Bazaar. From Melamchi Pul Bazaar drive via Panchkhal valley to Dhulikhel than back to Kathmandu .
